There was no point in pretending she was in a pleasant mood.
Any who knew of the Winter Goddess would be foolish to expect anything different, and so it was with a solemn face that the Goddess twisted her wrist towards the empty expanse of The Between. Clouds twisted and formed and moments later a small clearing in a Winter covered forest had appeared, with delicate snowflakes falling from the clouded white sky. It was months from Winter-time on Earth, and though time meant nothing to an immortal Goddess at this very moment time seemed to be passing more slowly than possible. There had been a time in her existence perhaps when time had not mattered quite as much as it did now, but as fewer and fewer prayers had come to her ears from the whispers of the world below, the silence had become unnerving.
They are forgetting me.
She thought, her brow creasing faintly as she considered this possibility. She had been a part of the the world for so long now it seemed impossible that this could be true, but it seemed an ever-increasing likely hood. She shivered uncomfortably at the idea and strode into the clearly, letting the comforting cold sink into her skin as snow began to fall in earnest now, coating her black clothing with a fine layer of powder white.
NOTES: Open to anyone! But ye beware, Jora's grumpy today. The Between has been shaped to resemble a pine forest in the dead of winter, and she stands in the middle of a little clearing with snow falling heavily.

Dream a better dream, and work to make it real.
| And Morpheus was the foolish god that decided to cross paths with the winter goddess.
He had been wandering around again, but not in his usual place (which was the mortal world). The sudden shift in weather made him shudder, and with a snap of his fingers he changed his garb to something more suited for the chilly climate. From his casual shirt and pants came a black thermal jacket with beige, fluffy fur at the top and winter boots - his jeans did not change, "Ah, much better."
Morpheus was honestly not quite sure who had initiated this change in the Between. With all the dreams he had to keep in check, he hadn't really socialised with the other gods and goddesses long enough for their names to be of importance to him. He obviously took note of those that were extremely siginificant, but he barely knew the names of the other minor deities, much less those that were not of the same culture as he. The man glanced around rather curiously, trying to see who was the cause of this chilly winter, and then noticed that there was a tinge of black amongst the dead trees that surrounded said figure. It was most probably that goddess, he thought. He wondered if he should approach her or just stay silent and move to another realm of the Between. He had to admit that he was curious of who she was, but if she could control winter, then chances were her personality would be relatively the same.
And he didn't want to piss off a goddess like that, nope.
Though oddly enough, she seemed bothered by something, who knows what. Should he approach her or not? - the question continued to linger in his mind as he stood there. Eventually it felt like he was simply going to wait and see what happens. Whether she would notice him or not would decide his next course of action, but for now he was standing a somewhat good distance from where she was, close to one of the twisted trees that looked like they could grab him with its branches. |

Lost in her thoughts she might have been, but the Goddess of Fear was ever-watchful and observant, and the moment the other God had entered her woods she knew about it. The very trees themselves whispered it to her, and though her face did not perceptibly change, her emotions did. Instantly, all thoughts of weakness or failure were locked away, and she settled back into her usual unbreakable mindset. She did not move as he approached, hesitant in his movement, but she did close her eyes and listen carefully to the footsteps. Small, but not a child. That eliminated a good number of the Gods she knew. Steps confident, but unsure of himself; that meant he was probably one of the older Gods, but not one of the more powerful.
"You're a Greek one, aren't you?"
She said finally, breaking the silence with her cool tone. It wasn't really a question, she knew he was; the Greeks always had a barely perceptible scent about them that was vaguely sweet, like rotting fruits. Like wine, really, the more she thought about it. She almost laughed, but decided it wasn't funny enough to be worth the almost pleasant reaction. Those were few and far between when in Vjora's presence, and she wasn't about to change that for some wine-o Greek God. She still had not turned to face him, but did angle her head back slightly so that a sliver of her pale face was visible.
"What are you, God of Snooping?"
NOTES: Grump grump grump. I should have used Grumpy Cat for her playby.

Dream a better dream, and work to make it real.
| He tilted his head ever so slightly at her guess. How did she know? Or were all Greek gods seemingly cautious of her? He had no clue, after all, he hadn't really been conversing with any for a while, much less non-Greek deities. Her tone portrayed a very calm and collected character - she was definitely the type not be shaken up so easily, and Morpheus didn't mind that, but he was still rather stiff. She had an aura that made her seem very powerful, and he wasn't sure whether it was just pure intimidation or she really had a lot of power.
There had been a cold gust of wind billowing by, making the man shudder slightly, "I wonder if there's really a god like that, I wouldn't know, but that'd be interesting," he responded, keeping his voice even. As long as he didn't show any signs of fear, he would be fine, right? Or was that the better option here? To show that he didn't really have a lot of jurisdiction in the realm of the gods?
Without thinking, he stepped forward into the clearing, away from the trees and his possible place of safety, "I'm the God of Dreams, actually," he circled around to see if he could get a better look at her face. Pale, cold. She looked fierce, "I am Morpheus - I mean no harm, just simply happened to stumble upon your winter wonderland, is all. Forgive me for not recognising you; I am not the best with names. So who might you be?" and he hoped that his choice of wording was alright. There was always the option of summoning his wings and fleeing, but he wished things wouldn't have to come to that. Flying in a state of panic can be rather taxing to him - not good for the heart, y'know?

His response did elicit a slightly amused snort from her, and she lowered the heavy black hood that had covered her thick black hair to get a better look at this Morpheus, God of Dreams. She'd never met a deity of Dreams before now, and she didn't mind admitting and showing some curiosity. She did turn to face him now, her face showing no more emotion than a faintly raised eyebrow.
"God of Dreams. Dreams only, or Nightmares too?"
Somehow she doubted it. He looked far too disgustingly cheerful and tan to be from and strand of interests akin to her own. Those who dealt with the prayers of the unhappy, fearful, angry, or otherwise had a certain look to them and this boy didn't have it. She had it in abundance, and she was well familiar with the look. A flicker of jealousy for his presumably pleasant job settled uneasily into the depths of her being, but she pushed it away as soon as it appeared. Jealous maybe, but she would not trade with any God or Goddess she had ever met. She'd never been a fan of beings who spent all their time wanting to be someone or somewhere else. If she was unable to be happy in the life she had been born into, she doubt she would ever be happy anywhere else. Hell, she doubted she'd ever be happy ever.
"Vjorla. Norse. Winter and Fear."
Straight and simple, that was the way she ran her life and that was the way she answered his question. NOTES: Grump grump grump. I should have used Grumpy Cat for her playby.

Dream a better dream, and work to make it real.
| Oh? A snort? Was that supposed to be a taunt, a sign of amusement, or both? He had mixed feelings about the reaction, but decided not to let that faze him. The lack of emotion on her face intimidated him, but nevertheless his steps were light, perhaps a little too carefree when facing the goddess of Winter and Fear. His brown eyes looked at her with curiosity as well, though one could see a sense of caution in them despite his lax attitude.
"My brother, Phobetor, is the one who creates nightmares, and is rather good at it too. I only oversee the dreams of mortals, and believe me, you don't want to see what some of them come up with," he lightly shook his head with a small smile on his face, remembering all too well some of the ones that he simply couldn't erase from memory just for being too...memorable. Whether they were extremely frightening for a mere human to contort or just plain odd, there were really a few that stood out amongst the billions and trillions of dreams he had seen in his immortal lifetime. For a moment, it seemed that the goddess showed an expression of anger? Frustration? Whatever it was, she was able to mask it very quickly, only allowing him to see her cold exterior. He figured that he may never get past that unless he pushed the right (or wrong) buttons, and while human psychology was easy, she was out of his league. He had not the faintest idea about her and didn't know how many human conventions could apply to her, but gods and goddesses always have some sort of humanity within them, no matter how sick and twisted they were.
"V...jorla," he tried to let the name roll off his tongue, but he was unfamiliar with it and so had difficulty at first, "Norse, huh? That's cool - not meant to be a pun," he put both of his hands up to show that he meant that, "A pleasure to meet you, by the way. May I ask what brings you here to this side of the Between? Because honestly I have no idea what I'm doing here, swear," and as he said that, he had glanced at his surroundings, watching the snow fall from the sky and admiring it for a while.

She'd been right. Not that she was surprised, she generally was good at guessing things about complete strangers, but it didn't help her mood any. In fact, it only made her face momentarily line in a frown. The movement was uncomfortable however (and facial expression generally was for her) and it faded quickly enough. A brother. This too only served to annoy her. She generally detested anyone that had a family, no matter how messed up they might be. When one was born from a snowflake, you tended to dislike being constantly reminded that you had nothing.
His second question gave her pause, and she considered it for a moment. What had brought her here? Honestly, she wasn't entirely sure. She hadn't had any particular purpose in coming to this part of The Between beyond simple wanderings. She did not answer at first, but turned her face away to ponder his question. Almost as if sensing her quandary, and excuse not to answer strode swiftly into the clearing. A massive wolf, black in coat with glowing orange eyes came from the outer edge of the clearing. It strode past Morpheus, completely ignoring him, and went straight to his Mistress's side, sticking his big black nose into her palm and leaving something behind that had been held in its teeth.
She pushed it gently into a pocket, feeling the folded paper of a prayer. One. Only one. One prayer from one lone soul on earth that cared to wish something of her.
The knowledge was depressing.
"Thank you Kar." She whispered gently to the wolf, who turned now to stare at the stranger. With a head nearly as big and broad as a polar bears, it rested on Vjorla's lap heavily, large pink tongue panting from its journey. "I have little reason for doing the things I do." It was a small admission, but at least it was something.
NOTES: I bought Jora a Companion wolf, just in case you were wondering where that came from. The wolf is how prayers are brought to her, people write them and leave them in the woods and her wolf Kar gathers them and brings them to her.

Dream a better dream, and work to make it real.
| He moved his head a little when she turned away, wondering what had caught her attention. Suddenly, without warning, a large black creature had appeared from the edges of where they stood, and when it strode past the god, he couldn't help but jump a little in surprise, though that was translated into a tiny step away from the wolf. He had let out a little yelp too, but he hoped the goddess did not notice that.
Morpheus watched her curiously as she seemed to have received something from the canine. A paper? He only managed to see a brief glance of it before she had tucked it into her pocket. Her aura had shifted for a moment despite her expression remaining the same. He sensed a certain sadness waft in the air, but then again, he might be wrong - he was always unsure when it came to gods and goddesses.
When the wolf's eyes looked at Morpheus', he almost froze. They reminded him of his brother's nightmares, and while he did oversee dreams, it didn't mean that he never looked at them. The human side of him already radiated with fear. He lightly shook his head to dispel it and then let out a sigh. When you try to mimic humans, you eventually become like them, in a way.
"Am I allowed to ask what that paper was, then?" he could feel snow touching his face, tingling his nose, and before he could stop himself he sneezed, "Oh, excuse me," he mumbled while rubbing his nose and looking away from Vjorla; he guessed he hadn't been in a place that was extremely cold for a while, so he wasn't quite used to it.
((ooc: ah, less than 300 words this time </3 a pity. Can't wait to get enough points to buy Morph a companion~))

Very little went unnoticed in the presence of Vjorla, and inwardly she smiled at Morpheus' reaction to Kar. As the Goddess of Fear, she had the unlikely quality of being amused and pleased by just such a reaction.
"Kar won't hurt you. He would never hurt anyone. Scare? Yes. Harm? No."
Not unless she asked him to, but she figured that was a fairly given thing. She stroked the beasts head and he closed his eyes, whining slightly and pushing his head up against her harder. They'd been together for what seemed like an eon, and though none knew of it Kar was her firstborn of the litter of wolves she had left on earth after her time with the pack. That too seemed like an eon ago, much as if it was a story she had read and not lived.
"A prayer."
She answered simply, turning her pale hazel eyes to Morpheus's face to watch his reaction to this sharply. Don't disappoint me now, little God-ling. Will you understand what this lone little prayer means to me?

| Well, if she did happen to notice his rather embarrassing reaction, then at least he could've made her laugh, right? Well it didn't look like her demeanour had changed, but he could only wistfully hope, "That's a relief," he said with a small smile on his face yet at the same time did an exaggerated sigh with his hand on his chest, "Though I'm no fan of being frightened, that's for sure. I'm already rather powerless under the jurisdictions here," the wolf seemed rather attached to her. He wondered what was her connection to the creature - they probably were together for a very long time, and that could be an understatement.
A prayer... he had mouthed the words as he let himself be lost in his thoughts. A prayer, a prayer - how long had it been since he heard a prayer? He couldn't recall. Or were his dreams that he gave considered prayers? He didn't know. His eyes went up to the pale sky once more, watching the snowflakes fall. They were beautiful.
"That's amazing," his voice was soft; he wasn't really thinking clearly of his choice of words, "In this day and age, prayers are such a rarity. You're lucky that you still receive them - I don't think I've ever heard of someone requesting me of anything. I wonder how that feels like," but he knew all too well how it was like, only not in the form of a prayer from a mortal. Humans are always desiring for something, and to be able to give that thing to them, even in the form of a dream, was like fulfilling their request even if he wasn't asked to do it.
His eyes were still lost in the little specks of white that fell from the sky, "A lot of mortals don't believe in the gods and goddesses anymore. Times are changing. They have this thing called aethism, you know? It's becoming rather popular as of late. It's rather disheartening..."

If the God of Dreams understood how much this lone prayer meant to her, it did not at first show on his face and Vjorla turned her gaze away in disappointment. For a brief moment she'd almost been hoping he would; though she'd never admit it, it would have been nice to share at least one thing with someone. When he spoke at last though, she paused and she could hear it now in his voice. Though the response was not what she expected. It was not disappointment in his voice, but excitement with a hint of... was that, jealousy? The response caught her off guard, and she turned an almost confused expression to the boy-like God. She said nothing however, only stared at him sharply as though digging through his very being, searching for the answer as to why he thought this was a good thing. He provided it, but she scoffed and turned her head again.
"They forget us because we do not remind them we are here. We have none to blame but ourselves."
Though that was of course only partially true, most of the Gods did not possess the power required required to do such a thing, and those that did had little care to. When you already had ultimate power, what did it matter what went on down on Earth? Vjorla shivered slightly, though not from cold. She had been alive for longer than many, for she had been one of the Norse people's first Goddesses and they were one of the early civilizations. She had watched them for a millenia, and observed as their civilization had changed and evolved. She'd grown stronger for it too, even though their belief had grown weaker.

Dream a better dream, and work to make it real.
| We have none to blame but ourselves.
The words echoed within him, making him have mixed emotions to it, "Is that so?" it wasn't like he was seeking to be known amongst the mortals, but he couldn't deny that there were simply some days that he was rather lonely. Then again, if humans knew he existed, then there may even be more chaos in the realm of dreams. Or would they be more obedient in the dreams given to them, knowing that there was someone who made them in the first place? Humans were so unpredictable, with each one not like the other, but most could be clumped up into something that was similar anyway. They were so complex that it hurt to think so much about it. He wondered for a moment, did he want prayers? While they were nice and all, and he did recall having them way back when, he couldn't help but be afraid(?) of what they would ask. Hm, afraid wasn't the right word for it though...
He slowly exhaled, watching the smoke that escaped from his lips waft to the sky, "I guess you're right, but do you think we, those of supposed higher being, should remind them that we exist? I wouldn't know, there are so many factors to consider..." chaos, lots of chaos - that could be one of the results if the gods decided to make all hell break loose on Earth just so that people could see for themselves that they did exist. Everything was so much easier when they simply had faith not all those new fangled ideas and whatnot.
The world was pretty messed up as it is, but Morpheus didn't want to do something that would only make things worse. He had tried to give better dreams to those who deserved it, really, but it didn't work all of the time. Some of them became...
He shuddered to think about it. Nightmares were always much easier to remember than dreams.
