HADES [break] WHAT DOES YOUR CHARACTER MEAN TO THEIR CIVILIZATION? [break] Hades is the sole ruler of the Underworld, the realm of the dead souls that has been given to him upon Zeus' victory against their father, Cronus. While he is not Death personified (that role falling onto Thanatos, one of his loyal allies), he rules over death and the dead, presiding over his realm as the sole king and the only one whose word and decisions overrule everything. Hades is such a feared god by the mortals that they will not address him by the name, fearing that it will draw the God's attention towards them. [break][break] WHAT LEGENDS REVOLVE AROUND YOUR CHARACTER? [break] Hades is the first child of Cronus and Rhea, and the oldest of the Olympian gods. When Cronus received the prophecy that one of his children would best him, he swallowed all of them but Zeus, who was hidden by Rhea and put to safety. Hades was the first one to be swallowed by his own father. When his younger brother Zeus managed to defeat Cronus and released his siblings, the three male Gods came to the decision of which realm would be given to each one of them. Zeus remained with the sky, Poseidon ruled the seas, and Hades became King of the Underworld, the land of the dead. He accepted his fate without a problem, and from that day on, became the ruler over the realm of the dead, where no one entered without his permission, and no one left unless he allowed them to. Some exceptions were made to that rule, and that has deeply angered Hades throughout the ages. [break][break] His Realm possesses five main rivers: The Styx, the most proeminent and central of the rivers, and also the most known. The Acheron, which is considered the river of pain, and that is used to guide the dead souls to the Underworld, with the aid of Charon. The Lethe, is the river of oblivion, and it is said that souls that bathe in that river will forget about their mortal lives. The Phlegethon, the river of fire, led to the inner depths of Tartarus, where the Titans were imprisoned. And the Cocytus, the river of wailing. [break][break] The Underworld is also divided into sections, and each soul's destination is determined by their deeds in life. Those that have done enough to deserve punishment for their deeds will be sent to Tartarus, which is said to be a dark, tormented world. The tormented cries of the souls that live in there echo along the halls, and not many can actually stand being in there for too long. [break][break] The Asphodel Meadows are for the most common souls that lived a normal life, but that didn't do any particularly distinguishing feat that would earn them a place in the Elysian fields. Ordinary mortals found their way there. [break] Elysian Fields: the Elysian Fields are the most calm, peaceful place in the Underworld. It's a place destined for those heroic souls that had performed important deeds in their mortal lives, or those that were closer to the Gods and had their benefit. There is no labor, no torture in the Elysian Fields, just peace, calm, and happiness.[break][break] Life in the Underworld, however, made Hades feel a sense of loneliness that he did not enjoy. Asking his brother Zeus to find him a wife, the king of the Gods offered Persephone, Demeter's daughter. Hades, upon seeing her beauty, suddenly felt enthralled by her, but realizing that neither Persephone, nor Demeter would allow her to marry him, he devised a plan to abduct and kidnap her. Calling Gaia, who owed him a favor, he told her to create the most beautiful Narcissus flower in the middle of the garden where Persephone happened to be gathering flowers. Distracted by the flower's beauty, Persephone tried to pick it up, the Earth opened up, and Hades, in a beautiful Golden charriot, appeared and kidnapped her, seducing her and luring her to him and making her his wife. Their first sexual encounter was not consensual from Persephone's part, but Hades, in his cold demeanor, believed it was the only way for her to acknowledge the fact that she was his now. [break] [break] Demeter, of course, was enraged once she discovered that not only Hades had kidnapped her daughter, but that Zeus had offered her as his wife, that she stopped all growth for the Earth. Zeus realized how bad it would be for the Earth to have no harvest, and therefore, sent Hermes to collect Persephone and bring her back to her mother. Hades seemed to accept it, yet he convinced Persephone to eat a pomegranate seed while still in the Underworld, which bound her to him forever, since the pomegranate was a sacred fruit to the Underworld.[break] [break] Hades' devious plans made it so that Persephone would be obliged to spend part of the year with him, no matter what decision her mother took. Zeus, intervening, reached an agreement that at least one third of the year, Persephone would spend with her husband. During the months Persephone was in the Underworld, Demeter's grief brought Winter upon the Earth.[break][break] Hades' realm is a very regal, albeit dark one. Upon the front gate, Cerberus, the three-headed hound, guards it fiercely to prevent anyone from entering without Hades' permission. Hades has a palace within the Underworld, a very rich one, and his is a marble throne. Despite the fact that his initial approach to his wife was hardly consensual, he truly loves her and treats her like his Queen. But apart from her, he's a rather cold, stoic, emotionless man.[break][break] [break][break] HOW WAS YOUR CHARACTER BORN/CREATED? [break] He's the eldest of Cronus and Rhea's children. [break][break] WHAT DOES YOUR GOD LOOK LIKE? [break] Dark hair, clear blue eyes, sharp features that are not really perfect yet make him appealing in many ways, without the perfect beauty found on gods like Apollo, or Eros, for example. Extremely elegant and regal, he is a king and acts like such. But he is also a dark king, and that is seen on his mannerisms, his eyes almost seeming to exude that darkness that belongs within him. He's muscular, but on the leaner side, with rather pale skin from all the time spent in the Underworld. [break][break] WHAT DOES YOUR GOD ACT LIKE? [break] Hades isn't the lord of the Underworld for any reason. He's got a darkness in his soul that can be seen through his sharp eyes. He's very serious, he rarely smiles or jokes. Everything he does or say has a huge deal of determination and seriousness, and he's very aware of the power that he holds and how destructive it can be. Therefore, Hades is extremely controlled. He doesn't have a flaring temper, his is rather a cold anger when it comes forward. He isn't shy of using subterfuges to get what he wants, and he usually will not stop until he gets what he wants. He'll do what it takes, no matter the cost, as Hades firmly believes that the end justifies the means. An example of his behavior was the way he purposely bound his wife to the Underworld, so she could never be parted from him. [break][break] Despite his behavior, he is not evil. He simply embraces the darkness that comes with who he is and is actually very neutral when it comes to conflict: having him siding in a war means having a powerful ally, but Hades isn't one easily convinced. He needs to know all the details, the pros, the cons, the reasons, the benefits for him and his realm, before he decides to help someone or not. But if he does, he will use every single card he has in order to make sure that his side is victorious. [break][break] Hades was actually the firstborn from Cronus and Rhea, only moments apart from their sister, Hestia, and therefore tends to act as such. He doesn't tolerate Zeus' womanizer ways. He doesn't agree with Hera's overbearing jealousy. He will often scold his brothers and sisters for things they do if he's not in agreement with them. Stoic could be a word to describe him, apart from the fact that it all changes when in presence of his wife, Persephone, who is the only woman he felt love for and has been faithful to ever since. He's regal, elegant, and as a human, it's even more evident in the way he speaks and his overall demeanor. However, when he does get furious, his wrath is rather overwhelming, as it's a cold, calculated, pierced anger which comes with absolutely no other emotions.[break][break] Usually mortals did not wish to utter his name in order not to attract his attention. He can be stern, cruel, unpitying, and rarely gives anyone a second chance. He believes that there is no such thing as a second chance, for 'death will not give you one'.Therefore, when his punishment comes, it is unfallible.[break][break] The only creature to see a different side of his is his wife, Persephone. To her, he can be a loving, tender, passionate man. But only she can see that side of his, no one else.[break][break] [break][break] WHAT ARE THEIR PRIMARY DUTIES TO THEIR PEOPLE? [break] Hades isn't the type of God to have many followers due to what he presides upon. Being associated with death isn't something most mortals want. But he is, in many ways, in charge of the balance of the world. Without him, there would be no souls being welcome in his realm and it would disrupt the balance between life and death, which is needed. Considering how rarely he actually leaves the Underworld to actually go to the mortal world, and how his presence in Olympus is not really welcome most of the times (Although there are those times he will simply appear because he CAN do it), he doesn't have the same type of duties as most Gods have. However, he watches over the soul of the dead and is their ruler, first and foremost. [break][break] WHAT POWERS DOES YOUR CHARACTER POSSESS? [break] Hades is the lord of the Underworld. The one that rules the land of the dead. It's normal, then, that he has power over them, and over spirits as well. He is capable of summoning spirits forward, opening the gates of the Underworld for those souls to come out and do his bidding. He can reanimate a corpse by bringing them life for a brief moment. He can sense death around him, and he knows when someone's about to die. If he wants to, he can reach to the depths of Tartarus and summon forth an army of undead warriors that will fight in his name. When someone dies, he is the one that will be there to ensure the body is indeed dead so the soul can be escorted to the Underworld by his faithful servants. [break] [break] He has a 'death touch': if he puts an effort in it, he can kill someone by touching them and separating their soul from their body, but he rarely does it unless he has to, as he believes that someone's death is determined by the fates, and not even he likes meddling with it. He can help someone's soul detach from their bodies in case they need it for any given purpose, and keep the body from decaying so they can return to their body afterwards. [break][break] Invisibility Helmet - Using his invisibility helmet, he is capable of making himself unseen to any eyes, godly or mortal.[break][break] Hades is a good close combat fighter, but he usually chooses to stay outside the battlefront and be more of a strategic soldier instead.
