Quirinus was seated under a great old oak, and all around stretched a recreation of Rome here in the Between. But it was not like the Rome of the mortals for it was the creation of the mind of an immortal who had existed before the city; and so here on the hill named for him was the great oak which the Sabines had cut down to build his first temple as a god of war, oh how long ago had that been. But all around that solitary tree stretched cobblestones and insulae, the tall apartments, of Rome of the Romans but still not the same as the Rome of earth. For some buildings stood where on earth they had long since vanished, others stood where they were yet to be raised, and new and old styles stood side by side. It was a remembrance of the Rome for which Quirinus existed.
The god looked down to the great forum, where the temples of all the gods stood, and even in his mind you did not find a great temple dedicated to him. No Quirinus here and on earth had no temple, merely a small altar alongside the other gods of the Archaic Capitoline Triad. He was the god of the city itself, every building was his temple, and so every act good or bad within the sacred boundaries of Rome profaned or glorified his name. He could remember every speech in the forum from the Rostra or within the Senate where mortal orators – great and small – would address the audience by the true name of Romans: Quirites.
Each home, from the wealthy to the poor, would have a small altar upon which he would be offered sacrifices and prayers. But the times were changing, mortals in their egotism longed for gods which served their whims and did not ask of them a greatness of being and service to a city. Selfish and short-sighted as ever Quirinus sighed, it had been the same all those thousands of years ago when he had walked among them.
Part of the Between around him swirled and changed instantly, mortar and stone vanishing replaced by a small wooden house. It had been his when as Romulus he shaped what would become Rome. Dwelling on the past would do him no good though, Quirinus thought silently, and waved the sight away – the Between changing back once more. The danger of being an immortal is that weighed down with so many memories you could linger in the past too long, and cease to care for the future. Quirinus though would not fade and vanish, he was Rome and Rome was eternal, of this he was determined.
Leaning back against the tree, not caring for how the pose crumpled his robes, Quirinus closed his eyes and listened. To what he could not say truthfully, he was half caught between the solitude of his own thoughts and the old chorus of prayers and thanks that he had once tended with such care was now long gone. Rome as he knew it, the Rome that swirled around him in the Between, was gone... but perhaps it might return?

It wasn't very often that the God of Commerce saw good old Rome in its classic state, up in the Between. Roman gods seemed to have become a bit more passive than they used to be, including himself. Perhaps it was because the number of followers Roman gods got these days wasn't too high. Perhaps it was just because most of them got bored and took a vacation on Earth, or somewhere in some private realm of the Between. The latter reason was Mercury's.
But right when Mercury had found the old city of Rome in the Between, he noticed that things were changing. The fake people in this fake Rome were fake demolishing all the fake buildings. Or no... They were reverse building it. Whoever created this image had messed up the time, and now Rome was shrinking and shrinking. When the city had shrunk to the size of one, tiny hut, Mercury could finally see who was responsible for this image.
He looked familiar, but at the same time foreign, this god. Curious about the unfamiliar familiar face, Mercury quickly changed into his old robes, and the winged shoes he was wearing turned into winged sandals. Merc slowly landed on one of the branches of the tree the other god was leaning against, and looked down at the old figure.
"I think you made a little mistake, grandpa. I mean, I'm no Chronus, but I believe time usually goes forward down on earth."
With a cocky smirk on his face, Mercury jumped out of the tree and landed next to the god. His eyes moved over the old figure in front of him. Yes, they had totally met somewhere in the past, but Mercury was not the God of Memories.
"Have we met? We have, haven't we? I believe we have met before."

Quirinus sighed a little as the vision of Rome retreated and he was left seated under his oak with nothing around except the green grass that stretched beyond the sight of even the god. He caught the glimpse of something move as the hut vanished, and then heard the rustle of leaves above him. Looking up Quirinus saw perched there a god he had not seen in an age.
Mercury was instantly recognisable, oh Quirinus may have been a relatively forgotten god – among mortals and immortals – but the god that was Rome knew all the deities which had or were worshiped in the city he had created.
Mercury as so often with prodigious talent speed past not only other’s intelligence but also good taste and sometimes ran too far or too fast, or so Quirinus had thought often. But then Quirinus was a more methodical deity, he tended carefully to the future and never acted rashly, he was more than most aware of the eternity that was his and so eternal he was prepared to wait and endure. Such was not Mercury’s way he thought with a wry smile at the god’s quick little jest.
“And more’s the pity that it does, mortals are right when they say that only time is truly a tyrant – after all even we immortals must watch time march unceasingly onward, passing even us by.” His face was worn with a wisdom born of eons and the gentle gaze was comfortable and relaxed.
Quirinus watched the god jump down and lazily he sat upright a little. Unperturbed by Mercury’s gaze his own eyes stared back and he spoke softly when at last Mercury asked his question.
“Oh it was an eternity ago now when last we met Mercury, I remember the night Jupiter sired you. I was there when they first erected your temple in my city. I watched all the wealth and commerce you stewarded into my city.”
The Between swirled and rising to his feet Quirinus and Mercury found themselves standing in the temple dedicated to Mercury.
“Is it as you remember too?” Quirinus gestured at the temple around them.

Was it supposed to be a pity that time moved forward? Mercury couldn't say he agreed with the old god, whose name still remained on the tip of his tongue. He usually felt like time was moving too slow. Whenever the god tried to give the global economy a small boost, it would still take at least a year until it was slightly noticeable; at least at his current power level. If it were up to Mercury, time would at least show any kind of attempt to keep up with the God of Commerce.
But Mercury was well aware that not every god shared this mentality. And the old man in front of him clearly was one of the gods who would rather stay stuck in their powerful past, rather than moving forward and trying to gain some new followers.
Mercury had to admit though: the life he used to live back in the classic Rome was pretty good. Plenty of offerings, people hosting sport events in his name, and all of the power he got from it; he could turn the poorest person in Rome into the richest one if he wanted to. But nostalgia wasn't something Mercury was very fond of. It slowed him down.
"Nah, I think it's pretty okay that time moves forward. Seriously, you should check out what people have managed to create the last few years. I mean, they created something that's almost as fast as I am, and they call it internet!"
Ever since the day Mercury discovered internet, he had been telling his fellow gods about it, regardless of the fact that plenty of them had already heard about it. And though he claimed the opposite, at his current power level, internet was in fact faster than the God of Commerce. But it was nice to have a competitor nonetheless.
"Alright, so you're older than I am, and you're calling Rome your city..." Mercury thought out loud. It didn't take long until he remembered who he was talking to. "Quirinus, right? God of Rome and stuff? Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's you. It's been a while."
While the Between created a perfect replica of his temple, which was built right against the Circus Maximus, Mercury walked over to a pillar and leaned against it. "Uhu, yeah, it's exactly the way I remember it to be. It looks a bit different though these days."
As soon as the temple had been formed, Mercury made the Between show the ageing process of his sacred "home". Pieces of marble broke apart, and people cut off pieces for their own buildings. Eventually it stopped ageing and Quirinus and Mercury were standing in the wallless temple, which was missing most of its original statues, and which now had a few blurry tourists walking around in it.
"I mean, it's pretty okay that people still enjoy visiting my temple, but it has a certain lack of athletics and offerings. Don't you think?"
