Quirinus more than most gods visited the mortal realm, but he rarely left Rome when he did however curiosity was not something that was foreign to him and so he found himself in Athens. The city was very different to when he had last visited, he had come and watched Demosthenes and marveled at the mortal’s speeches, but now it was a modern bustling city. Full of wires, metal, glass, and people ever hurrying in their mad rush of a lifetime. He had quickly dispensed with his usual robes, choosing instead a nice black suit and white shirt, and wandered around the city for some time.
Eventually the god joined a tour group, standing quietly at the back and listening to the guide carefully. She pointed out the busts of gods among ruins, talked about the myths, and occasionally people would laugh at some silly story about the gods. Quirinus could not help but sigh somewhat and cast about his eyes at ruins he could recall in their prime or even being built.
He remembered when Rome had marched here too, when all this was Rome and so here too he defended and guarded Rome & Romans. He left the tour after a little while, and as he made his way through back streets and markets he was stopped several times to hawk goods or even by backpackers asking for direction.
In these moments there was so little different from the present to the time he recalled. The set may change but the actors and themes never did. He couldn’t help but think of a joke he had heard once,
A Greek and an Italian were arguing over who had the better civilisation. ‘We have the Parthenon’ said the Greek. ‘We have the Coliseum’ said the Italian. ‘We created art and philosophy’ said the Greek. ‘We created the Roman Empire’ said the Italian. The Greek with a snap of his fingers said victoriously, ‘We invented sex!’ The Italian nodded and then added, ‘Ah but we thought of having it with women.’
He chuckled to himself and turned a corner finding before him the National Gardens. Walking through the grounds he soon found himself at a café. Sitting down a waiter quickly rushed over and made small talk.
“How are we sir?”
“Good thank you.”
“What can we get you today?”
“I will have some of your coffee, Greek style, and maybe…” He looked around and pointed at the orange soda drink that a child was eagerly drinking. “And whatever that is, thank you.” The waiter was a little puzzled but figured the gentleman was just one of those odd people you always meet when working in hospitality, so she nodded and left him.
It was a little while before the god received his order, and he gingerly undid the soda and took a small sip. Sickly sweet, but still nice and refreshing… he noticed the kid was using a straw to drink the soda and so Quirinus followed suit. He finished the cool drink quickly, and sighed contentedly. Perhaps not everything modern was reprehensible the god thought generously, and taking a satisfied sip of his coffee watched the world which had left him behind pass by.

Dream a better dream, and work to make it real.
| Morpheus had been sitting in the cafe too, though he had no idea he was in the presence of another god (or gods) - after all, he barely recognised any of them, let alone those who shared the same culture as he. It was harder to figure out who was who since they could take any form they wanted to, yet in a way, they just had a way of recognising each other no matter what form they took. Well, most gods had that ability, Morpheus did not. He really did need some sleep.
He put his arms on the circular, smooth table in front of him, hunched his back and rested his chin. He was going to close his eyes soon, but for now, he observed silently, taking note of anything that seemed out of place. At one point, they rested on a (seemingly) old man that requested...a soda? His ears pricked (or he liked to imagine they did) as he overheard the chitchat. He didn't know what soda was? Weird, but then again, some elderly mortals didn't do so well with keeping up with the times. Still, though, soda was a rather old invention in human standards, so anybody who lived in the city should know of it, right?
The God of Dreams watched him curiously. Something about him seemed different than the other mortals...maybe he was not one of them? But he couldn't be too sure - he couldn't just walk up to him and say, "Oh hey, you don't happen to be a god, are you?" - that would be stupid.
Brown orbs wavered for a moment; his position tempting him to sleep, but the God of Dreams must not sleep. Well, right now, there were hardly any dreams happening because this city was in its daytime, but knowing the mortals, there would be a few that would be sleeping now, and it wasn't just quick naps either. Some of them really had weird internal clocks, he mused, only made it more annoying to track everybody, honestly.
...hm, should he go to him, or wait for him to notice Morpheus and come to his table? There was an empty seat across him and the table was wide enough for two, but he wasn't quite sure what his next course of action should be.

A mother trying to make her child sit still and the little boy wriggling free with giggles of triumph, or the two backpackers flicking through their travel guides and trying to plan their next stop, or the young man staring at him… that last sight made Quirinus stop looking around and stare at the fellow.
Quirinus sipped at his coffee, and pushed out a chair for the young man at his table and nodded at it. The god was intrigued, and he had time to spare – well what immortal didn’t have time to spare Quirinus mused with a wry smile. He waved for the waiter again, and the young lady trotted over.
“Could I please have another coffee, and an extra cup.” The waitress went to go but Quirinus’ hand gently grabbed her arm. “Oh and if you could tell that man to join me.” She would have refused the request normally, but there was something strangely compelling about the gentleman and so she nodded.
Quirinus looked away from the young man turning his attention to the birds that flitted between the trees and fountains. The waitress carrying a new coffee and an extra cup detoured by the brown-eyed young man’s table,
“That gentlemen would like you to join him.” She didn’t say any more, but her smile was charming and before the man could reply she headed off to put the coffee and cup down.
Quirinus nodded and thanked her quickly and began to pour out the two cups of coffee. A mortal may have been nervous about whether someone would join them, worrying about being embarrassed, but an immortal who had watched civilisations rise and fall, who had endured and would always endure… no Quirinus was utterly confident and unperturbed.

Dream a better dream, and work to make it real.
| Oh shit - there it was, their eyes had now met, and he didn't just glance away either. Earlier on he seemed to have been doing the same thing that Morpheus was doing: observing. But now both of them were gazing at each other, and even if he wanted to back off, he couldn't. The God of Dreams then watched the old man sip his coffee. He was never too fond of it, but he certainly liked fraps. The taste of mocha was much more welcoming than bitter coffee. Hm? Did he just push a chair and gestured him to sit there? He guessed he should've expected it, but he was still hesitant.
Why should he be hesitant though? He was a god. Perhaps he had been spending too much time with mortals...it was almost as if he believed that he needed to protect himself as well, but unlike humans, he couldn't die. Hence, there should be nothing to worry about, right?
As he sat there, pondering, he didn't notice the waitress approach him until he heard her voice being directed at him. He didn't know how to respond but nodded anyway, and that was probably all he was allowed to do, for the lady had already left before he could say anything else. He blinked once, twice, and glanced at him again for a brief moment before standing up from his seat. He then placed the chair back properly before heading towards the man that had invited him. He wasn't scared, why should he be scared?
He sat down on the seat offered to him before speaking, "I suppose you'd rather talk to me than have ignored my gaze or call the cops?" now that would be a weird thrill, being arrested for something as simple as making someone uncomfortable. How would he get out of prison? He'd have an excuse to put everyone to sleep, what fun, "Also, thanks for the offer, but I don't drink coffee. I already get little sleep without it."

Quirinus watched the young man sit down, and pushed the cup towards him. A few eyes had turned towards them but Quirinus paid them no mind, he supposed it might be unusual for a young man to be invited to join an older one – or if not unusual than maybe salacious… now there was a thought, another quick glance at his companion and the thought was dismissed quickly, Quirinus wasn’t much of a god for cavorting with mortals or immortals in that way.
“Wouldn’t you?” He sipped at the coffee. “I have found ignoring things to be so very dull, and I hardly think calling the ‘cops’” The slang word was difficult for Quirinus and he pronounced it careful to mimic how his companion had. “… Would be appropriate.”
The man seemed lost in thought for a moment before he politely refused the coffee, the closing comment made Quirinus quirk a brow – could he be? Something did seem a little odd and not entirely human. But he was distracted by recalling that his companion had no drink, “Perhaps you would like a soda? They are quite refreshing, or at least the orange one is the others might be different – are they?” The question was half asked and half rhetorical.
The birds began to sing and Quirinus gaze was pulled away to the fountain in which they played and sung, the acropolis in the distance behind them. “It was a beautiful city…” He trailed off not adding ‘but it was no Rome.’ To be biased towards Rome was almost a job requirement for the patron deity of the city.

| He shrugged, "I might've been suspicious and did the first thing I said," and he raised a brow when it seemed the old man had a hard time pronouncing the word 'cops'. That was definitely weird, even someone of his age should know what cops meant, or rather not have a hard time saying it. How it escaped his mouth was as if the word was very foreign and unfamiliar, which puzzled the god greatly.
"The orange one? Not sure what brand it is, I'll probably just have some iced tea, though I have no money on me so I can't buy any," lest you're going to treat me? he wanted to say, but decided against it. The man should have money though since he ordered two cups of a coffee and a soda. Morpheus still felt a little cautious around this man, but it didn't seem like he was going to mean any harm, so he should be okay.
For a moment, his companion's eyes were averted from him and to somewhere else. The noise around them had been a mix of the city and of whatever nature's left. It was very much normal to him, but for all he knew, the old man may have found it odd as well (seeing as he didn't know what cops was). He managed to catch the man's mutterings, though he wasn't quite sure what it was about. He used the past tense though, so was he referring to how this place looked like in the past? How far back, he wondered? If he truly was an immortal, he must've seen it in its true glory days. Then again, he could be over thinking it. This man was probably at least fifty years old, maybe even sixty, and times have really changed since then.
"You're not from around here, right?" he asked meekly; his voice soft. It was just to keep the conversation going as he didn't know what question to ask yet. He didn't want to pry, but he wanted to know if this man was not mortal.

“Suspicion may be wise, but it is very ill-becoming…” A god was what Quirinus wanted to finish with but simply trailed off as he watched another scene unfold.
The little boy who had been struggling to free himself from his mother’s grasp and insistence on sitting still had at last got free, and with a whoop of joy had run off mother in tow. The god smiled and chuckled, ‘Run young man, run for all your worth.’ He thought and powerless here as he was had to resign himself to that silent mental cheering that all beings – mortal and immortal – are wont to do.
Turning back to his companion Quirinus listened to what the young man said, and with an easy shrug simply replied, “I am sure I can manage to cover an iced tea, I may have one too.” He waved the waitress over once more and ordered two ice teas.
The young man seemed nervous and curious, the first thing puzzled Quirinus as he had imagined the man an immortal too… but nerves were not something most immortals felt. Though some gods were more human, more reflective of the mortals who had birthed them, so he supposed it was possible; but then what god could this man be? Before Quirinus could begin to mentally go through the list of deities he was aware his thoughts were interrupted by a quiet question.
He could not help but smile and with a twinkle in his old eyes the god replied, “No I really am not.” The ice teas arrived and taking a tentative sip Quirinus found these even more to his liking than the orange soda. “I am from Rome.” It was statement which was said by millions of mortals but which Quirinus made sound full of potency and portent. Of course there was a time when the god would say 'I am Rome' and even immortals would tremble, but that was eons ago even for immortals back when Mars was a god of the harvest.

| Morpheus let out a small laugh; his teeth can be seen. Ill-becoming? He thought that being cautious was a good thing? Even if he was a god, he could never be too trustworthy, especially when some of the other deities are rather violent or quick-tempered. He realized that his companion had turned his attention elsewhere once more; his gaze on a child and his mother. He couldn't help but tilt his head a little in confusion, why would that interest him so much? Or did he simply just want to cheer the boy on? He had no clue.
He flashed a smile, "Thanks," ah, he hadn't had iced tea in a while. He hoped it was the brand he liked, but then again, most brands were relatively acceptable. Hm, should he just satisfy his curiosity now and see what happened? If he got it wrong and he was actually a mortal, well, he could always put him to sleep and pretend he was a thief, running away from the scene as quickly as possible. Or, well, maybe just end up coming up with an excuse. Yeah, the latter sounded less taxing, but the first one sounded really exciting. If he did happen to be a god though...who exactly was he? For all he knew, he could've been talking to Zeus and he'd have no clue. He inwardly shuddered.
Ah, the iced teas arrived. A sip told him that it was one of the ones he liked, rather sweet, but that was how Morpheus liked it. The man seemed to have enjoyed it more as well. The way he answered his question though...there was a certain heaviness to it, like there seemed to be something underlying that single, short statement. If he were a god, at least Morpheus now knew that they were not of the same culture. It was more of an excuse for him not to know who this man was even if he was probably very important. Morpheus hardly knew any gods or goddesses outside his culture, but he actually had a hard time recognizing anybody.
"That's cool," and he wasn't inclined on answering if his companion were to ask where he was from. He stifled a yawn as he sensed the few dreams that occurred in this fine afternoon reaching peaks or drawing to a close. He never really understood the feeling of being seemingly in two places at once - at one point he was sitting in a cafe, but a part of his consciousness would drift to elsewhere. At the back of his mind, he could see their dreams unfold, and with a single thought he could shatter it or form it into something else entirely. Honestly, he wasn't in the mood to intervene.

“The young they are always the best of them, they haven’t forgotten the thrill of courage or the love of justice.” He inclined his head towards the child still eluding his parent’s grasp. “Time makes them worried and in their fear they throw away all the gifts that were theirs to begin with. None of them can live a life long enough to satisfy them, but they could all live a life noble enough to fire their souls.”
In his time the god of Rome had seen the very best of men: he had seen the Fabii march off to war, Gaius Marcius take Corioli, he had walked in the funeral train of Agrippa Menenius Lanatus, oh the men he had seen his city produce filled his heart with soaring pride. They accomplished greatness not even the immortals could have dreamed of. Because their mortal lives were always in peril of either death or corruption their luminous greatness was all the brighter to behold.
Caught up in these bright memories Quirinus simply nodded at the young man’s thanks. Finally he interjected into the comfortable silence and spoke softly.
“Demosthenes was a man who never lost that courage of youth and the brilliance of mind that courage creates. Oh his speeches were divine, you’ve never heard something so sweet and yet so thundering with power! But it was more than that, any man may speak well, but the true brilliance of him was that he was determined to see his city succeed or to fall with it, there was no compromise only loyalty unalloyed.” Quirinus shook his head in disbelief. “I always thought he was more Roman in that way…” He looked over at his drinking companion, the young man’s head still cocked to one side, and added “No offence intended of course.”
Silence returned to the two figures at the table, Quirinus lost in memories and the young man? Well Quirinus could not say, simply that he was not all there.
After the rather underwhelming response from the young man to Quirinus mentioning his city’s name the god could not help but inquire,
“Have you never been to Rome?”
For surely any who had could not say simply ‘That’s cool.’

| He felt rather guilty for not taking that much interest in his words, for he knew that he was saying rather important and inspiring, but a part of him felt like he just wanted to doze off. Had the mortal youth really influenced him that much? He should lay off his dream adventures for a while, "Indeed, it all changes when everybody gets older...they eventually become a part of a society that they honestly need not to participate in, but do so out of...fear, I suppose? Wishing to belong? It's all in their heads," his voice that was already rather soft had trailed off. He realised that he wasn't so much in the mood to talk. If he hadn't noticed the old man across the table, he probably would've fallen asleep - a luxury he hadn't had for...how long was it? Days? Weeks? He didn't really want to think for now. Sleeping was the only way the dreams would shut up.
The way he spoke though; he truly loved these people, didn't he? The...Romans, was it? It was almost as if he was there to witness it himself. If he were a god, then that would be very much possible, yes, "No offence taken," he answered just so that the other man may have some peace of mind.
Ah, what a question. It just dawned upon him that by the way he spoke of Rome, his companion had expected a much better answer than that. What could Morpheus do? He was exhausted, "I may have, but I can't remember. It's been a very long time...apologies if my answer is not what you may have anticipated. Then again, you should probably expect such an answer amongst most of the youth unless they too were very knowledgeable of Roman culture as well. Not that I'm saying that it's uninteresting, but nowadays people are into...celebrities and stuff."

Quirinus smiled and swirled the ice cubes in his drink saying nothing at the sleepy statement from the fellow across the table. Men needed each other, needed society, but that society should create the best of men – or so went the thinking of the god that had made and was Rome. Sadly this modern world produced and catered only to the low and base in mortals.
He caught a stifled yawn from the man and asked, “Not keeping you awake am I?” Quirinus did not wait for an answer before turning away and watching the scenes before them play out. He had asked more out of formality than true interest.
Quirinus listened closely though when with exhaustion and exasperation the man answered his question. It was strange to see someone who looked so virile and young sound so utterly weary, and it was not the tiredness you’d find from one too many nights spent in Dionysos’ sweet embrace, no this was something different.
“Must have been an age for you to have forgotten Rome.” A surprisingly generous statement from the god, given that Quirinus in the past had been known to smite those travel guide writers who wrote that ‘Rome was overrated.’ But Quirinus was in a good mood, the ice tea and orange soda was lovely, and he found himself intrigued by the weary young man opposite. “Celebrities…hmpf.” Quirinus put the drink down. “Lions and dragons succeeded by hyenas and boars, this is what the march of time has done, it used to be that the young of the world would flock to my city. They would marvel at even her ruins and wonder what they must have been like when their unsullied beauty stood tall. And in her prime, there was no other place on earth, nowhere matched her for power, grace, beauty, she was the centre of the world.”
The old god sighed wearily himself.
“And what has followed my Rome? This…” Gestured disgustedly around him at the crowd. “… Mediocrity worshipped, and all that was excellent and exemplary shunned and forgotten – not even a dream any more.”
As he had spoken something had fired within him, there was a light in his eyes and a rolling echo in his voice, a shadow of the power which lay beneath.

Dream a better dream, and work to make it real.
| He was about to answer the question whether he was keeping him awake or not but it didn't look like he was very interested in hearing his answer, anyway, so there was only silence. But, yes, he was indeed keeping him, and he so very much wanted a quick nap, but that'd be rude.
"An age..." he repeated the words, as if trying to get his mind around it. He then smiled, "That may not be too farfetched. May have been one age, may have been two," and if indeed this man was immortal, he may have figured out what he was talking about. A mortal may simply be confused with his choice of wording, but what Morpheus had meant was quite literal. He listened curiously at his companion seemingly vent about what he said about celebrities. The god had expected it, for any old man who felt so much pride for a city that used to be so powerful would feel resentment towards them and how times had changed.
After what he had said, Morpheus was very inclined to ask who exactly he was, but held back and continued to drink his iced tea. It was already half empty since he knew that this would help him stay awake during their conversation. It wasn't as bad as coffee and it would suffice, "Humans worshipping other humans...as if they found gods too high for them, or they simply had stopped believing on something they couldn't see. The world has become more materialistic, and so have their beliefs. For them, at least they knew that these people they put on pedestals are real, but it's rather idiotic that they spend all their time on them when they can be doing so much more," he swirled the partially melted ice cubes with the straw in between his fingers. He felt that maybe a part of the other man's frustration had rubbed off of him; he didn't feel all that sleepy anymore. Or that could've been the iced tea.
"But you know, people still dream about them. I'd know, I've seen it. It's not entirely lost to the sands of time."

Quirinus returned the knowing the smile with a wink and nod of his head, followed by a small chuckle before drinking the last of his ice tea. He listened to the other god speak, others may have pressed for an identity but Quirinus was not the sort of god that hurried – and besides why interrupt a perfectly tolerable conversation?
“The vast Pharisaic multitude has always been as petty and as small as they are now.” He said in agreement. “But there were a few great men long ago, whose actions and lives redeemed the whole and made those small little people aspire to more. Now though such mortals are nowhere to be found.” He sighed and looked off forlornly. “I remember once…” But Quirinus cut himself off with a chuckle. “You hardly want to listen to my reminiscing now do you?”
Before he could raise another topic his fellow god commented that men still dreamed, and suddenly Quirinus pointed a finger and with an ‘Ah-ha!’ spoke, “Morpheus!” The God of Dreams and the God of Rome had never physically met, but how could the God of Rome not know of the god who filled the minds and souls of his charges with visions and dreams – such things played their part in Rome’s rise as much as any more tangible thing. So with a small the old god lent back satisfied that he had discovered the identity of his companion.
It was only after a little while of bathing in success that Quirinus remembered himself and added. “Quirinus, Wielder of the Spear.” He shrugged. “Not that such titles matter much any more…” He paused and looked at the young god intensely, “They do still dream of it? Of my Rome? Of her days of titanic beauty when all the world was hers? They remember Rome at least?” It was rare that anyone remembered him, Quirinus knew this, and he had already begun to be forgotten by the time of the zenith of Rome. Gods of abstract things, gods which demanded more of you than they gave, which presented an ideal which could never be reached only aspired to, such gods were not long held dear in men’s minds.
But when they were… mortals could accomplish impossible things when they sort the aid of such gods as Quirinus, but he had not been sought in eons. Perhaps though it was enough that his Rome would endure in dreams… no that wasn’t enough, not for the god who had made the Immortal City, no Rome and he must rise again.

Dream a better dream, and work to make it real.
| Morpheus tried to hide his confusion with words that he didn't recognize Quirinus using. If the other god didn't know of slang words, then Morpheus in turn didn't have a very large vocabulary, having been plagued by dreams with certain words that were repeated much more than necessary. Context clues would save the day, right? He figured that he got a good grasp of what his companion meant though. He'd like to think that there were mortals that still very much inspired others to be something better, though. In fact, they even had a term for it: inspirational stories. He didn't want to say it anymore though, thinking that he'd probably scoff at it.
He let out a nervous laugh, "I don't really mind, sir. Apologies if I seem uninterested, you've probably noticed that I'm quite exhausted," he said, but deep down he was also not too keen on listening to the story if it didn't pique his interest at some point.
Morpheus was startled at the sudden proclamation though. While he knew that hint had been rather obvious, he was surprised at the triumphant voice and, well, he was still thinking that he might've been mortal. Turned out he wasn't - the old man had been trying to guess who he was this entire time. He couldn't help but slightly frown when he heard the name. Despite his terrible memory, he'd usually know of a name if he'd heard of it before, but his mind seemed to say that the title was entirely unfamiliar to him. He couldn't have forgotten about him because he never heard of him (probably), "Have we met before? I can't seem to recall...I've been forgetting a lot of things lately due to the sudden increase of humans and their dreaming, so I'd have to apologise again if we did meet and I do not remember you. But yes, they still do dream it. It'd happen when I let some mortals have some freedom with the surroundings of their dreams, and I'd recognise Rome start to form until it towers above everything else. As odd as humans are, their imagination can be amazing when in the right place."
At this point he had rested his head on the back of his seat and closed his eyes. He let out a deep exhale as he found himself staring at the bright blue sky. There were only a few white clouds obstructing it. He then focused his attention back to his companion; he wondered how long the conversation would be, or how long would it take for him to pass out. In the land of mortals, he himself was akin to a mortal - or it seemed like his endurance wasn't that good here. He actually had fallen unconscious more than a few times in his centuries on Earth, with that bringing up some interesting results. He had ended up in the hospital, strangers' houses, and a bunch of other places.
