Dream a better dream, and work to make it real.
| It had been near dawn as Morpheus continued to watch the sky on the highest part of a building that was akin to a tower. He had been standing on a cement, circular shaped floor, with his arms and a bit of his upper body resting on the rails that had started to rust from the weather. The sky still had tints of purple, but most of it was becoming rather blueish, and he knew that meant that the sun was rising soon. Ah, the big ball of flame - he hadn't let himself actually wait for it to rise in such a long time. He had forgotten how it was like, only able to see it in dreams.
He had been alone, as usual, with his face tingling a little from the last gusts of evening wind touching him. His eyes closed for a brief moment, listening to the cries of pigeons leaving their nests and taking flight; their wings flapping hard enough to make the noise echo. There were hardly any cars out at this time, which was to be expected because it was a Saturday - in this day and age, nobody in their right mind would be out unless they had a specific reason. Not a lot of people felt that they had the luxury to just wake up in the wee hours of the morning and casually enjoy the sunrise. No, times were different now.
He stifled a yawn and rubbed his eyes. He wasn't exactly sleepy; he couldn't be. His duties required him to be awake at all times (for the world always had people who were asleep due to timezones), so sleep was his luxury (even if his father was the personification of sleep itself).
Morpheus kind of envied the humans, then, that they could sleep everyday.

These days Mercury had no problem with taking a day off. In fact, he had taken the past few years off. Things seemed to be going pretty well on their own, and the god had no reason to push any of the trading or traveling in the right direction. After all, there weren't a lot of people who spent time making offerings to him these days, so why would he continue helping the humans like this? So instead of continuing his job as a shepherd of the economy, Mercury had spent the last few years in the Between, playing sports and drinking wine.
But once again, humans proved to be incapable to keep the market flowing. And now that there was a so called crisis at hand, Mercury had to get back to work. The worth of all these currencies had to be stopped from plummeting, graphs had to be pushed up; Mercury had a lot of work to do. But luckily his job didn't require him to be active 24/7. So right after he had given the global economy a little push, the god took some time to check out what Earth looked like these days.
London looked pretty okay. They sure had built a lot of nice flats. The same was true for New York and Tokyo; nothing particularly interesting. But on his way to Rome, Mercury noticed someone standing on a tower. An old friend, who Mercury hadn't seen for quite some time, was watching the sky as usual. The god grinned as he turned and ran through the sky, up to the tower, wings flapping on his ankles.
"Hey, sleepyhead!" Mercury said, as he stopped right next to Morpheus. "You bringing the dreams to the humans on your own these days, or have you found someone to replace me?"
The god chuckled as he pulled his own ankle back and started doing some stretches.

Dream a better dream, and work to make it real.
| People were still dreaming at this time, he knew; he felt it. Some were twisted, others uplifting, others flat out boring. He felt rather sad for those who had no dreams at all, but he supposed that no dreams were better than nightmares. For a while, he had spaced out, letting the dreams close to him envelop him slowly, carefully - because he didn't want to suddenly lose himself again. He remembered that happening to him a lot of times when the sudden influx of mortals had begun to make its impact felt. How in the world did the population of humans jump in billions in less than a century? It made his work more of a headache, that was for sure.
The voice startled him, for he didn't expect for anyone to visit him, let alone take notice. He visibly flinched as he pulled himself out of his dreamy state and turned his eyes to the person that had called his attention. Huh, he looked familiar. Who was he again?
He blinked a few times and it clicked when he heard what the god had said after his greeting, "Ah, Merc! It has been a while, hasn't it?" and he flashed a smile before letting his eyes wander back to the sky. Any minute now and the sun will rise, "Nobody has been able to do it as well as you, let me tell you that. I don't deliver dreams all the time, with the world at...what, 7 billion now and still growing? Besides, humans love to twist them no matter how I shape them."
He let out a chuckle as he glanced at his friend doing some stretches, "You seem rather busy, hm? How long has it been since we last met, anyway? I forget."

Morpheus hadn't changed a lot since the last time Mercury had seen him. Of course the God of Dreams could take any form he wanted, but for as far as Mercury knew, he often chose for dark hair and dark eyes. His clothes had changed a lot though. Apparently the god had continued to dress himself just like mortals would, but the type of mortals he chose to represent were a lot different from the ones whose clothes Mercury was wearing.
"It sure has!" Mercury said, in response, as he closed the highest button on his shirt. He was wearing a fancy suit, but right now, he looked everything but fancy. There was a necktie hanging out of his pocket, and his shirt was hanging over his pants. His shoes would be the only thing that looked normal, if it wasn't for the silver wings that were folded against the sides.
"Oh, you flatterer you." the God of Commerce chuckled, as Morpheus reminded him of how well he had done as a dream deliverer. As he listened to his friend talk about how the human population had grown too large to be cared for continuously, Mercury couldn't do anything but agree. "Yeah, you tell me. Things used to be simple when coins were made of gold. Now most of the money isn't even tangible, and only shows up in graphs and charts! But hey, you leave them alone for a decade, and suddenly all of that money is as worthless as everything below Medusa's chin."
With a small grin on his lips, Mercury chuckled once again. That Medusa joke was a keeper.
With hands as fast as a machine, Mercury tied the tie around his neck, and straightened his clothes. He finally looked as if he'd fit in well in a business meeting. "Last time we met, hmm? Well, you were still in a suit back then, so I'd say... Somewhere in the fifties? Anyways, a lot has happened since then. Hey, did you know that they finally elected a black president in the US? I mean, seriously, how long did it take them to finally do that?"

Dream a better dream, and work to make it real.
| Today he had donned a simple, periwinkle collared shirt with a dark jacket, jeans, and sneakers. Not much, yep - he hadn't been expecting company today, rather he was thinking of attempting to blend in the crowd again and maybe scare the shit out of some people with weird hallucinations. Ah, mornings. The sun had already started to rise, but Morpheus couldn't care less. There was always tomorrow, he thought, he hadn't seen Merc in what felt like decades. Clearly it was something that he would prefer to pay attention to. He was now facing the God of Commerce with his back against the rails and his arms resting on top of them.
Well, his friend seemed rather chipper today. And he was wearing a suit too. Classy.
He smirked, "Wouldn't say it if it wasn't true," he said coolly, "Ah, I miss the times when the jingles of coins were music to people's ears," and he laughed when he heard the joke, letting his head tilt back for a moment as his eyes saw a glimpse of the changing hues of the sky. He almost lost himself for a moment in nature's beauty before he turned his attention back to Mercury. By then, his friend had already managed to fix himself up into something a lot more formal. No mortal would ever know he was a god, that was for sure.
"Really? I can't remember the last time I wore a suit," his brows had furrowed as he frowned a little, trying to recall such a time. His memory had become worse over the decades, and he wasn't liking it, "Ah, yeah, I heard about that. Lots of people think he's doing a horrible job, but it's not like the past presidents have done any better. Is it really supposed to be a step forward or backward for humankind? Who knows, I barely look at human politics."
He had to admit it was nice talking to someone again. It felt different to talk to a mortal compared to talking to one of your own; the latter was definitely much more comfortable, "So what brings you here? I honestly didn't expect to see you after so long," why did he leave again? To take care of mortal matters? - he really couldn't recall.

"You know, the fifties, in which every human man used to wear a suit? I'm pretty sure I didn't just dream that, and if I did, I'd blame you for messing with my mind." Mercury chuckled and bumped Morpheus's shoulder with his fist playfully. He was already used to his friend forgetting things. A lack of sleep tended to do that to gods. Technically, he too could just stay awake all the time, but he didn't want to end up forgetting things he wanted to remember.
The God of Commerce nodded as he listened to his friend. According to Morpheus, people weren't too happy about that black president. Mercury could have taken his friend's word for it, but checking it wouldn't take too long, right? He raised his finger at the God of Dreams, and with a quick "Oh! Be right back!" Mercury ran away to the nearest library.
Having arrived at the library in about three seconds, Mercury climbed in through the window, took a quick look around for books and papers about the president, skimmed all of them for info, and jumped back out of the window, right when the alarm went off. Having left for about ten seconds, Mercury stopped on top of the tower. "You're right," he said, as he took a bite of a piece of warm bread he had picked up along the way "they aren't very fond of that president. But people call it a step forward anyways. He is trying to get the economy back on the rails though. Now if he'd just make a little offering to me, every once a while..."
"Oh, well I guess you could call it luck that I came across you." Mercury said, as he threw away the napkin he had taken with the bread. "I was just checking out the world a bit, since I've spent a few decades in the Between. Oh, you need to see this, Morph!" Once again, Mercury ran away. This time, he climbed into the first house with an open window, picked up a few things, and returned three seconds later to Morpheus.
Enthusiastically, Mercury showed off the things he had just stolen. "This here is the new kind of currency they use in Europe. It's called a Euro, and it has the most obvious name they could come up with." Without giving any warning, Mercury tossed a coin to Morpheus. "And then there's these things!" The God of Commerce showed his friend a black iPhone. "This little box is actually a phone! Amazing, right?" With a single swipe over the screen, Mercury unlocked the phone and started up Safari. "And this here is called internet, and it's basically a program in which you can find literally anything."

Dream a better dream, and work to make it real.
| Morpheus looked rather confused. Everyone used to wear a suit? The idea sounded so foreign to him that he had a perplexed expression for a moment before he felt the small bump in his shoulder, "You know I can't 'mess with your mind', Merc. At least, not through my powers. Words are a different story," his powers weren't as strong as they used to be from lack - no, that wasn't right. He used his powers all the time, but maybe it was the way that they were used that made it weaker? Or was it because people hardly believed in him anymore? He didn't know. All he knew was that he hadn't tried putting a god or goddess to sleep in a long time, let alone force an image into their heads. He was afraid of the consequences.
But how can everyone used to wear suits? He thought that everyone was into having less clothing now.
He was a little surprised when Merc suddenly raised his finger up and disappeared before his eyes. Right, he had forgotten how fast his friend was. He stifled a yawn once more, figuring that once he was done, he would be back, and the conversation would continue. Three seconds passed, ah, he was going to take longer than he expected. Perhaps the topic of the black president was interesting to him - either that or America was just rather far from where they stood.
The god waited a few more seconds before his friend returned with a confirmation and a piece of warm bread. Looked tasty. The sun's rays could already be felt; he could feel the warmth touching his back, "That's good, I suppose? It'll take s'more years before humanity makes more progress though," he was tempted to ask if he could have a bite of that bread, but he figured that Merc was probably going to a) disappear before he could ask or b) finish it before he could ask.
"I've been hanging around more in the mortal world than the realm of the gods. I have no idea what goes on there, honestly," he said with a shrug. Before he knew it though, his friend had disappeared on him. He didn't quite catch what he said as to why, though. This trip took a lot shorter, with what felt like two breaths he was back.
Still hasn't changed, he thought as he eyed the stuff Mercury just stole. His reflexes were rather slow when he tossed the coin to him though, so the currency almost fell across the railing when Morpheus managed to grasp it with his fingers. He let out a sigh of relief as he tucked the coin in his pocket and turned his attention back to his friend, "Oh, I've seen those a lot lately. It seems like everyone has them. The dreams that go with the phone can get rather weird though," and yes, he was very familiar with the thing called internet, "Have you tried looking yourself up? The internet is scary. Has that thing called Rule 34 - please don't look that up," he visibly shuddered for added effect.

Right after Morpheus told Mercury about looking himself up on the internet, the God of Commerce began to type. The phone wasn't as fast as Mercury wanted it to be, but it worked nonetheless. "Ooh, I remember this!" he said, as he turned the screen towards Morpheus, and showed him a picture of an old vase which portrayed Mercury stealing some cattle. "Yeah, those were some great cows... Anyways! Rule 34, you said?" With a grin he added the line next to his own name. "Can't be too bad. I mean, you should have seen the Romans! Every time they chiselled a picture of me, they'd add a giant-" For a moment the god stopped talking, as he raised an eyebrow and looked at the screen in his hand.
Before he said anything else, Mercury tossed the phone over his shoulder, off the tower. "Yeah, let's change the subject."
"You know," Mercury said, as he wiped some breadcrumbs off his clothes. "that economy would be at the top of its life, if it were up to me. But hey, I ain't got no power." The god opened his arms in a gesture of how little of things he got in hands. And he wasn't lying, he could feel it well. He used to be able to do amazing things, but nowadays, hardly anyone believed in him. The little power he still got was made of leftovers of past prayers, and sport events. But nagging about this wasn't going to help him, so instead he just continued his conversation.
Morpheus had been spending his time on Earth, and he claimed to have no idea of what was happening up in the Between. So of course it was Mercury's job to inform his friend about the wonderful happenings of the realm of the gods. "Anyways, things are just like usual up there." Mercury said, as he pointed up to the sky. "Zeus is being bossy, Loki is being sneaky, Vjorla is being creepy; oh, and there's this random screaming and rumbling that returns every now and then." Well aware of the urgency of the subject he had just discussed, Mercury simply kept up his calm act, just to see if Morpheus would react as shocked as he expected him to react.

Dream a better dream, and work to make it real.
| As soon as he heard the sound effects of the iPhone keyboard, he knew that Mercury was doing what Morpheus had told him not to do. In a way, it'd be easy to influence him to do something then with reverse psychology or whatnot. He tilted his head a little when the screen was faced at him, "I don't," he responded simply at the vase, though vaguely recalled him stealing cows for some reason. Were they cows? Oh, he said they were cows, so he was right. That was good, his memory wasn't totally nil, "Wait no seriously don't look it up -" he didn't even dare to look at the screen. He wasn't sure of what to make of his friend's expression, but he figured that since he threw the phone off the tower, it was probably bad, "I told you, and as usual, you don't listen."
He wasn't sure what to say when Mercury had mentioned how great the economy would be under his command. It probably would be, but Morpheus could never be too certain. Mortals were unpredictable and rather stupid, even if you spell it out of them, sometimes they wouldn't listen even if it was best for them. He knew what his friend had meant though with having little power, though there were children that still believed in the Sandman, which was relatively close. He could hear their voices sometimes, but he wouldn't listen to them all the time. After all, it was mostly either to get to sleep or to scare away the Boogieman or something. He had bowed his head; his gaze on the floor, "I know that feeling. It's disheartening."
"V...jorla?" the name had sounded familiar, but he wasn't quite sure where he heard it from. Had he said it once before? If yes, where? He couldn't recall. For a while, his expression had shown something akin to puzzlement again. It took him another second for the latter information to sink in, "Random screaming and rumbling? What does that mean?" he wasn't exactly shocked, but he was rather concerned, that was for sure. Screaming? What kind of screaming? As in mortals or immortals screaming? That would be scary. And what about the rumbling? Was some god or goddess creating random earthquakes out of amusement, or was this something else entirely? He hoped that Mercury had at least an answer to one of his questions that were now buzzing in his head, keeping him more awake than a while ago.

"You don't know about the rumbling and screaming, hmm?" Mercury chuckled and softly shook his head at Morpheus. Funny how a god who was always with his head in the clouds spent hardly any time above the actual clouds. The god was quite sure that most gods would have heard the screaming at least once or twice by now, and it was a hot topic everywhere in the Between. The fact that Morpheus didn't know about this event once again showed how uninformed the human-loving god was.
"Seriously, Morph, you should spend less time down here in the dirt and more time with actual gods." Sure, it was blunt and lacked all signs of subtlety, but subtlety wasn't really the way of the God of Commerce. Delivering the harsh truth just made conversations a lot faster. And even though it sounded a bit condescending, Mercury truly meant the best for his friend and former colleague. "I mean, the Between acts like it could burst into flames any second, and meanwhile you're just down here, not knowing a single thing about it. Trust me, this whole screaming thing is worth looking into, and especially worth missing a sunrise for."
Mercury had been spending quite some time already looking for answers, but most gods knew just as much as he did. And some were even terribly calm about it. Sure, screaming and rumbling wouldn't hurt anyone, and the worst it could do was waking up a sleepy god, but there had to be something more behind it. There was no way this was going to end well if nobody found the source. Gods and goddesses could use the Between to travel to specific places on Earth faster, so if anything would happen to the Between, it would be Mercury's fault. Or at least, that's what it felt like to the God of Commerce and Travellers.
"But well, about that screaming and rumbling and stuff: it just happens every now and then. Just screaming, rumbling, and then nothing. It's obviously the announcement of something big, and it's driving me insane!" Mercury began walking from one side of the tower to the other in frustration. He really hoped Morpheus would take this as seriously as it was supposed to be taken. "I've been looking everywhere - and I mean literally everywhere - for the source of it, but nothing! And that's the worst part! Something is happening and I can't find the source, and that while I'm like the best detective in the Between!" Of course, being a detective and running around looking for clues was exactly the same to Mercury.

Dream a better dream, and work to make it real.
| He was a little irritated by how Mercury looked so smug about him not knowing of a supposedly important event happening in the Between. Then again, his friend had always been like this, and he had to admit that it was partially his fault for (somewhat) avoiding the realms above like a plague. He didn't exactly like it there, being automatically pushed into the responsibility of having to deal with all of those dreams. At least down here, he wasn't being forced into looking at everyone's dreams, and he would only subconsciously look at a close range of them.
His annoyance could only be seen by a little twitch with his mouth though.
"I know, I know," he said, and was about to follow it up with excuses but decided to just shut up about them. No point about complaining about it; he was born to wield this duty, after all. If he wasn't doing it, then who would? Nevertheless, his desire to just lie back and relax was becoming all the more tempting by the year. He was rather intrigued though by how serious Mercury was treating this 'problem'. So these tremors and screeching weren't caused by the gods themselves? If they did come from another source, then yes, he could see how it would be a cause for concern.
"It doesn't sound like nothing, the way you put it, I mean," he was put off a bit by Mercury's excitement, was it? He didn't know the right word for it, but his friend seemed rather hyper. His brown eyes followed the other god walk fro one end to another in quick pace, seemingly in deep thought, "I'm not sure if you're a certified detective, but yes, it does sound rather serious. If it's clear that none of the gods or goddesses are responsible for this...screaming and rumbling, was it? Then it may be an enemy to us, and that would be very worrying indeed," he was starting to mull it over now. Were there any similar occurrences happening here on Earth? Well, he knew that the weather was getting out of whack here lately with Global Warming and whatnot - storms were raging worse than before, and earthquakes were getting stronger too...
"Is it possible that the source could be from here, if not elsewhere? Or a realm that the gods do not usually visit?" where there even such places? His mind was in a bit of a jumble and so he was unable to recall properly. He had forgotten a good part of which place was what in the Between. Mercury should know it best, and figured that if he was stumped, then he should've searched everywhere that was known to gods already, "You should see some of the typhoons these mortals are taking. They're very powerful, and I'm not sure if the gods are causing this or some other being in power..."

"Hey, if anybody's fast enough to see this troublesome rumbling from every single angle, it's me." Mercury said to his friend, with a pretty serious look on his face. Of course Morpheus didn't think the God of Commerce would be any good as a detective. The fact that he had been gone for a while had made others forget about how perfect the god was. Mercury felt like it was going to take a lot of time convincing the gods and goddesses that he was in fact the fastest, smartest, and best-looking god of the Between.
"But you're right. This stuff is worrying, and I doubt this is just going to stop on its own." The God of Commerce took a golden coin out of his pocket and started to let it roll over his fingers. Fiddling with small things like this always helped him to calm down a bit. "But you know, it might be very pleasant if I wasn't the only bloody god who seemed to give a damn about this whole situation. I mean, sure, you might dislike the Between because of your whole dream thing, but I'm sure not every other god up there wouldn't mind that whole place to turn into the underworld or whatever."
As soon as Mercury heard Morpheus say that perhaps typhoons could be the cause of the rumbling and screaming, the God of Commerce took a pencil and a piece of paper out of his pocket. In about a second, he had drawn a sketch of some swirling thing, the Earth, and some clouds. "Alright, this here," he pointed at the clouds "is the Between. And this here," the god pointed at the Earth "is our lovely piece of dirt." Having said that, Mercury tapped on the swirly thing. "This here is a typhoon. See how it's puny and doesn't even touch the Between? That's because it's just a typhoon."
Mercury put the pencil back in his pocket and folded the piece of paper into an airplane, before throwing it off the tower. He sighed and turned back to Morpheus. "Also, typhoons don't scream, nor do they rumble. This whole thing is being caused by someone who wants ruin the Between, and I know it has to be someone who hates gods, or someone who wants to rule over us, or something like that."

Dream a better dream, and work to make it real.
| He showed a smile, giving in to his friend's claims, "You've said so yourself, and I cannot think of anyone else who can compare," he supposed that to him it was the truth because he couldn't really think of anyone, anyway. Some of his memories were starting to reattach themselves, previously lost in the flurry of dreams. He was trying to think more clearly than he had before.
Morpheus watched his friend take out a small coin and play with it, something that the God of Dreams figured he couldn't do. If he did try such a thing, then he would probably had failed badly, embarrassing himself and maybe earn chuckles or rolled eyes from anyone nearby. He listened silently as his friend started to rant/explain about this predicament, taking note of his underlying frustrations. He knew that this was something serious, but perhaps he didn't outwardly show it. He didn't exactly dislike the Between; he just didn't want to go there as often as other gods did.
"I only used it as an example, Merc. No need to get so wound up," his eyes follow the paper airplane as it flies past him. He couldn't help but watch it make its way to the world, soon to land somewhere - anywhere, and eventually come to its fate where it would be crushed, torn, soaked, and anything else in between, "You're right about that, though. It has to be someone who wants to ruin the Between, or something of the sort. Has to be someone who has enough power to be able to shake the realms of the gods, and it'd be normal to conclude that only a god could cause such a thing, or someone of higher being. I just like to explore the possibility that since you couldn't find anything up there, then maybe the answer is down here. There are certain places that have a stronger connection between these realms than others, right? This world isn't exactly completely cut off, otherwise we wouldn't be here, wouldn't we?"
He paused, pulling his eyes away from the plane as soon as it was out of sight and turned back to Mercury, "Also, it's rather sad you're thinking that you're the only one who is truly concerned. I'm not sure how I can help, but if you need my assistance, I'd be glad to give it. I don't hate the Between to where I'd want it to be destroyed. Is there anything else known about these screaming and rumbling besides the fact that they do these things?"

Mercury's eyes followed the paper plane as it slowly floated down to the houses near the tower he and his friend were standing on. It crossed the god's mind that perhaps some human would find his drawing eventually, but then he remembered that humans didn't care enough about things to actually take a closer look to the paper. His paper plane would probably be thrown away with little to no effect. But nevertheless, it was a good distraction and managed to calm Mercury's mind for a minute or two, while he listened to Morpheus.
"Alright," the God of Commerce said, as he turned back to his dreamy friend "so what you're saying is that something very powerful is hiding right under our noses, and the noses of the humans, and we don't even know about it?" The thought of not being able to spot a powerful being while it hid itself on Earth was even more frustrating than the idea of it hiding in the Between. There were no cloudy grounds down there in the dirt; there was no way to hide from gods over there. Mercury felt like he would have found this rumbly danger already, if it was truly hiding on Earth.
"Or, imagine this!" Mercury's eyebrows raised and he looked as if he just found out about something incredible. "What if it's even lower than Earth? What if it's that boney jerk face of a Hades? I bet he's rubbing his hands together, muttering "death to the gods" right now!" This had to be it. Mercury had just cracked the code, and he had figured out the evil mastermind behind the plan to ruin life for all gods in the Between. Seems like it was the King of the Underworld all along!
"Okay, Morph, you and I are going to pay a visit to the lovely soul resort known as the Underworld!" Mercury said, not even leaving the option to disagree to his friend. The God of Commerce held out his hand to the dream god, and waited for him to take a hold of it, so he could run off to the Underworld, and be there in a few minutes.
