Ares [break] WHAT DOES YOUR CHARACTER MEAN TO THEIR CIVILIZATION? [break] Ares, the Greek god of War. The personification of the violent side of battle. Born from Zeus and Hera, he was never the most loved of the Olympians. His violent nature, his love for battle and bloodshed often made him spurned by his fellow gods. But the truth is, none of them saw the true nature behind his explosive exterior. Ares loved the violence and the bloodshed, the clinking of swords and the cries of battle. But he wasn’t all about that. He was a formidable warrior, rivaling no one else in the entire Earth when it came to battle skills. He had a great sense of leadership, despite his impulsiveness getting the best of him. He was loyal to those that he chose to benefit, loyal to his soldier, and would often put on his armor and grab his weapons to fight alongside his army. He was the patron god of the Thracians, and would often visit them and aid them as he could. Also very often, when he needed refuge away from Olympus, it was Thrace that he chose. He also watched over the Spartans and most warrior cities had a shrine to him. [break][break] WHAT LEGENDS REVOLVE AROUND YOUR CHARACTER? [break] From a very young age, his father didn’t show much affection towards his son, usually being quite negligent instead. It was during one of these days that Ares was kidnapped by two giants called the Aloadai, and trapped in a giant bronze jar. His father did nothing, and it was only through the help of his brother Hermes that he was able to escape. [break][break] Only then, thinking that his son would have been in danger, Hera decided to send her son to a better environment where he could be raised in safety. She chose Priapus to raise and train her son, and that was where he remained until he was an adult. Coming back to Olympus, he decided to take over the mantle of God of War, for his nature and personality seemed to be fit for it. And that was when he started becoming hated amongst his fellow Gods thanks to his hot-tempered and violent manner. Some of them disdained him, some of them feared them, and only a few bothered trying to get acquainted with them. One of those few were Eris, the Goddess of Discord, who he’s very close to, and Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love. With Aphrodite, at first, it had been nothing but another lover to his bed. But slowly he would discover that what he felt for her was love, the only time he allowed himself to actually love a woman in such ways. Married to his brother Hephaestus, however, Aphrodite could not be fully his, and that fact greatly bothered him. Ares was quick to be jealous of her lovers, and sometimes even confronted them (Adonis was a clear example of it as he killed him out of jealousy). But their relationship was quite steady throughout the years. One of the most famous stories about his relationship with Aphrodite involves her husband, Hephaestus, setting up an invisible net in the alcove where Ares and Aphrodite were making love. In that very moment, the net trapped the two adulterous lovers and Hephaestus called the other gods to show his wife’s infidelity, but things didn’t quite work as Hephaestus had wished, as apparently, either the other Gods were envious of Ares or simply did not seem to care. [break][break] Ares has fought in most battles waged in Ancient Times. The most famous of them was the Trojan War, which also counts as one of his biggest defeats. When Aphrodite decided to support the Trojans against the Greeks, Ares took her side and went to battle, despite the disapproval of most of the Olympian gods, including his sister Athena. Using her superior strategy, she managed to beat him twice: once by rending him unconscious with a stone, and later on, by aiding one of the Greek soldiers into wounding Ares enough so he would be forced to retreat from battle. It is said that his cries of pain were so loud that it caused the Earth to shake. Going back to his father to complain about the treacherous acts of Athena, he would find out that his father did not give as much importance to his complaints at all, which made him extremely angry and bitter towards the Goddess of Wisdom and his father’s preference of her. Despite being usually disliked by his fellow Olympians, Ares did come to their aid when he thought it was necessary and worth it. When King Sisyphus found a way to trap Hades, he came to his uncle’s rescue, threatening Sisyphus and forcing him to release Hades.[break][break] [break][break] HOW WAS YOUR CHARACTER BORN/CREATED? [break] He's the direct son of Zeus and Hera, brother of Hephaestus,Hebe and Eilithyia, and half-brother of far too many... [break][break] WHAT DOES YOUR GOD LOOK LIKE? [break] Dark-haired, dark-eyed, Ares is the kind of God that does attract attention everywhere he goes. Tall, strong, imposing, physically strong, he tends to wear his armor most of the times, and when he doesn't, he favors outfits that will not be cumbersome, and usually brown or black.. He can be considered a handsome man, with strong facial features and a powerful, deep, baritone voice. [break][break] WHAT DOES YOUR GOD ACT LIKE? [break] Ares is hot-headed, impulsive, driven by his lust for battle and a man who’s quick to resort to violence. He’s not diplomatic and neither he believes in solving things through words. He’s intense, the kind of man that will be noticed when he enters a room. He’s strong, not only in his physical shape and muscles, but also in his personality, never backing down, never giving up. He’s highly proud as well, and will hardly admit defeat – rather, he’ll try to justify it somehow and put the blame on others. Despite his impulsiveness, Ares is very intelligent, a super battle strategist and a rather passionate man as well. When he chooses to protect someone, he does it fiercely as everything in his life.[break][break] He’s relentless, overwhelming, insatiable when it comes to his battles. A dangerous man when angry, and a man to be wary of when in a calm mood, he won’t stop at nothing. He tends to be commanding, a true leader, although he lacks the perceptiveness that his sister Athena has. Athena commands the strategic war, while Ares personify the battle lust and the anger. He’s determined and driven though, and tends to say things as he thinks they are, using no diplomacy in his words or bothering to be ‘nice’. To him, what needs to be said will be said, no matter how hurtful or painful the words are. When he loves, he’s fierce and passionate, and is considered by many a great lover (he has won the favor of Aphrodite for a long time, after all). He only allowed himself to truly love once, however, and he still carries those feelings, much to his own distress. He’s a handsome man who attracts a lot of female attention, so he’s not exactly one to sit idle. Ares has had many lovers and has his chosen ones in the mortal world. Like many of the Olympians, he’s been known to have had affairs with men, usually strong warriors that he believes are worth his favor, although he prefers women. [break][break] WHAT ARE THEIR PRIMARY DUTIES TO THEIR PEOPLE? [break] As the God of War, Ares is not only in charge of many aspects of it, but he's also an active combatant and often descends to Earth to fight alongside his mortals. He is the one overseeing all aspects of battle and the one that receives the offerings from warriors before they head to war. Despite his violent nature, he's also the protector of warriors, especially those that are known to be devoted to him. [break][break] WHAT POWERS DOES YOUR CHARACTER POSSESS? [break] Warfare, Strength, Resilience, Durability: As the God of War, Ares is a master of combat and warfare. He’s got superhuman strength and agility for a man his size and could be said to be the physically strongest of the Greek Gods. He’s highly resistant to injury as well, and has a stamina that allows him to fight for days without feeling exhausted. He can be wounded, however, and Athena showed that by taking her own brother out during the Battle of Troy, incapacitating him for days so he would not disturb her plans. He’s also very physically strong, built like a true warrior. Despite his actions and choices that could have been argued over the years, Ares is a superb strategist, although he prefers a more hands-on approach than a more subtle one when it comes to war. His choices sometimes can be argued, but when he puts his mind into it, there are not many that can reach his level of strategy. He has superb expertise on all melee forms of combat, but highly favors swords or axes.[break] [break] Domination: Ares can incite people to anger, provoke them through mental means, and exert a certain domination over those that decide to stay by his side. He can incite anger through words, cause a minor amount of discord (not as much as Eris would, though). When fighting, his battle cries are also capable of giving people fighting alongside him a boost in their strength and confidence, through motivation of their spirits. He can also attempt to disorient an opponent, however, that requires more concentration and when he does, he’s more vulnerable to physical attacks. [break][break] HAVE YOU READ ALL THE SITE RULES?
