Ryūjin -- 龍神 -- LUMINOUS BEING [break] WHAT DOES YOUR CHARACTER MEAN TO THEIR CIVILIZATION? [break] Ryūjin is the Bringer of Rain and the One who Controls the Tides, meaning that he is asked to cast good weather for sailors and fishermen. [break][break] WHAT LEGENDS REVOLVE AROUND YOUR CHARACTER? [break] Ryujin lives in a great palace under the sea called Ryugu-Jo, which is made of coral. It is there that he tends to the tide jewels that control the tides and sends his sea-turtle, fish, and jellyfish servants to do menial bidding. Ryujin fathered Otohime, who fell in love with a human and became the mother of Jimmu, the first Japanese Emperor. It is because of his familial ties to the dynasty that Ryujin defends the Empire so fiercely. He once sent Tide Jewels to aid a Japanese Empress who was attempting to invade Korea. Ryujin's wrath can be terrible, as exemplified by his treatment of a jellyfish servant who lost the Sea King's meal. Ryujin crushed the poor thing and turned its bones to dust, and this is why jellyfish have a soft form. [break][break] HOW WAS YOUR CHARACTER BORN/CREATED? [break] Soon after the Gods Izanagi and Izanami were formed from the chaos of the young earth, they formed the Japanese islands and fell deeply in love with each other. From their union was born the original Japanese Gods, until their last son, Kagutsuchi, killed Izanami while she was giving birth to him. Ryujin was among these original gods. [break][break] WHAT DOES YOUR GOD LOOK LIKE? [break] Ryujin's true form is that of a great, white dragon, with a long, serpentine body and koi-like scales. A stripe of long, coarse fur runs down his back and ends in a silky fin, and his face is heavily decorated with antlers, whiskers, and needle-like teeth. Ryujin can take any human form, but his most favored is that of a stern-faced young man who seems to be in his mid-twenties. [break][break] WHAT DOES YOUR GOD ACT LIKE? [break] While this Dragon God is typically benevolent and passive--even allowing his daughter to wed and live with a human on the shore--his wrath can be something to behold. Dragons in Japan are know for their great & terrible mouths, and he's more than happy to swallow up anyone who poses a threat to Japan. He sometimes abuses his servants. When ravenous his wrath is nearly sadistic. On the lighter side, Ryujin is typically passive. He's known for his wisdom and revered for being a (relatively) generous and kind God. [break][break] WHAT ARE THEIR PRIMARY DUTIES TO THEIR PEOPLE? [break] He controls the tides of the Pacific & decides when the rain falls, aiding fishermen and sailors. When sought by Royalty, he will usually respond with guidance and/or reinforcements. [break][break] WHAT POWERS DOES YOUR CHARACTER POSSESS? [break] While he is the King of the Sea, his only power over it resides in the Tide Jewels, which he hoards in Kyugu. Ryujin possesses the ability to fly in both forms, despite being wingless, and can speak through his mind's eye when in his dragon form. His human form is inhumanly agile and quick.
