Quirinus, 'Wielder of the Spear' [break] WHAT DOES YOUR CHARACTER MEAN TO THEIR CIVILIZATION? [break] To the Sabines he was a god of war, a defender and conqueror who thundered forth with his mighty oaken spear. But when Rome came not even a god of war could resist them, but they did not tear down his great temple, no they began to worship him too. He became the patron god of Rome the eternal city, and of her citizens. Quirite or Roman the two terms were one and the same, wherever the city of Rome extended her power and wherever Romans went Quirinus was offered devotions as their god. [break][break] WHAT LEGENDS REVOLVE AROUND YOUR CHARACTER? [break] Quirinus was not a god of many legends, he was a god of a city and her people and far too abstract a concept to be surrounded by much mythos. But there was one tale that followed him: that he was Romulus deified, the legendary founder of Rome semi-divine already ascended upon his death. Of course this myth ignored the fact that Quirinus was originally Sabine. But perhaps the god had wandered among mortals once, perhaps he had descended and altered the course of history, and saw to the rise of Rome and the fall of the very people which had brought him into existence? [break][break] HOW WAS YOUR CHARACTER BORN/CREATED? [break] Quirinus had no elaborate myth of birth or creation. His people had been a simple tribe and for them war was a reality, and as is the way of man any reality required a god to explain and look after them, and so Quirinus was born in their minds as the god of war. [break][break] WHAT DOES YOUR GOD LOOK LIKE? [break] Quirinus almost always appears like an aged man, not yet with winter in his bones but with his prime long behind him. Wearing the simple robes of any citizen for whom he is the patron god, or on occasion he will recall the original purpose for which he had been birthed and will stride forth resplendent in armour looking like some eagle. [break][break] WHAT DOES YOUR GOD ACT LIKE? [break] Some gods are easily described, their personality a direct reflection of their task or patronage, but Quirinus is a god of something abstract - a city and citizenship - so how could he reflect something such as that? He is contemplative and slow to act, considering all the possibilities and probabilities, and this nature also creates a certain aloofness. He is not a retiring sort, in that much he resembles a city, and loves the bustle and conversation of company; however his aloof nature can make him somewhat difficult company. The times when he does act one can see an echo of his original self, a great god of war at whose spear mortals and immortals would tremble, but of course he is not that any longer and it is merely an echo. [break][break] WHAT ARE THEIR PRIMARY DUTIES TO THEIR PEOPLE? [break] Quirinus is responsible for the safe-keeping and prosperity of the city of Rome and her people, and for the purity and sanctity of Roman citizenship. [break][break] WHAT POWERS DOES YOUR CHARACTER POSSESS? [break] Quirinus has the same powers as any immortal god. Responsible for the safety and prosperity of Rome and Romans he exercises them for the brilliance and beauty of them. But when he wields his mighty oaken spear he is a mighty god of war once more, and his powers are once more directed to the defence of Rome and Roman citizens.
